Embu University holds mental health and disability awareness sensitisation

Embu University Dean of Students, Prof. Fredrick Njoka, through his office organized a sensitisation program for his students with special at the University.

The University took up the initiative in a bid to create awareness amongst those students who are living with disabilities to boost their self esteem and also to educate them on their rights as PWDs as explained by the Dean of students.

"Embu University is a growing institution, and lately we've been receiving a mixture of students. We thought it wise to first have a session with them, take them through a few areas as far as it concerns their well-being as PWD. We also plan to make it big by involving other students in the subsequent sessions that will follow,” noted Prof Njoka.

Graca Awuor, assistant admin at the office of Dean of students says: "Because of misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health issues, people often suffer in silence and don't seek treatment for their conditions. Mental health awareness is an important initiative to improve understanding of mental health conditions and increase access to healthcare for those who need it."

Benedict, a student living disability: "I want to really thank our school administration for organizing for us such a wonderful session. The knowledge imparted on us will go a long way in shaping our view on matters disability and more importantly, it helps us in boosting our mental strength. We look forward to seeing more of this.

"We are surely going to walk out of this meeting with our heads up and ready to be ambassadors and champions of disability inclusion and awareness,” said Benedict.
