The newly completed Komarock South Primary school opened its doors for the first time to learners on the morning of Monday 26.

Hundreds of pupils and parents could be seen trooping to the new public school from as early as 6:00 am, all of them looking bright in new uniforms.

The new school brings to eight the total number of public primary schools in Embakasi Central constituency, with each school accommodating at least 2,500 pupils.

“Learning in progress. The Learners' admission order will be as follows: Monday 26/9/2022 Grade 5 and class 7. Tuesday Grade 3 and 4 and Wednesday Grade 1 and 2,” Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Mejja Ndong posted a message.

The MP told Wananchi Reporting that the school was meant to help reduce congestion in the surrounding schools, and save parents from the pain of having to pay exorbitant fees in some learning institutions.

"Our plan was to help decongest especially because we only had one public primary school in Komarock ward, but I am afraid we may not realise this just yet," noted MP Ndong.

"The new school is already full, with 2,000 learners covering Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Class 7 already registered."

"Take note that we don't have Grade 6 and Class 8 yet, which means the number will go up," added the MP.

The school currently has 37 complete classrooms, is three streamed, and has 15 teachers.

All the classes are filled up, with Class 7 already boasting over 120 new registrations.

"The new school needs 50 teachers, but for now we can only manage 15 teachers," noted the legislature, adding that Embakasi Central constituency has a shortage of 200 classrooms.

Parents trooped to the school wearing smiles. Most of them told Wananchi Reporting that they had transferred their children from surrounding private schools citing high fees demand amid tough economic situation.

“I am very happy as a parent to bring my child to this new school. I believe it will help reduce congestion in the surrounding public primary schools,” Gladys Karanja, a resident of Komarock ward told Wananchi Reporting.

Residents of Komarock ward have in the past been sending their children to surrounding public schools like; Mwangaza Primary school, KOmarock Primary, Kayole 1 Primary School, Mwangaza Primary School Kayole.

Others have had to seek learning in public primary schools in neighbouring Embakasi East and Embakasi West constituencies.

Some parents said they had to take their children to private schools in the area after missing spots in the already congested public primary schools.

According to data from Nairobi City County Education department, the capital has slightly over 200 public Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and primary schools.

The number is significantly small given the growing population in Nairobi.
