Residents of Eastleigh, Pangani and Mathare have raised concern over rising cases of people dumping garbage on the side of the roads.
Sections of Juja Road have been turned into garbage points – something residents say has become an eyesore.
In 2022, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja called out residents of Eastleigh over rampant disposal of garbage on the streets.
Sakaja had wondered why just hours after cleaning the city, the residents go back and litter again.
Today – two years later – the residents have not changed or learned to keep their environment clean.
Some of the residents who spoke to Wananchi Reporting said that the situation was posing serious health risk to children who play outside.
“This is now becoming a major problem in this area. The environment is very dirty with garbage thrown at every corner,” said Mama Evelyne Kioko.
Residents are blaming unscrupulous garbage collectors for the mess.
“These heaps of garbage you see are dumped in the dead of the night by people from this area and even from far."
"They come sometimes with trucks or Mkokoteni and dump heaps of garbage in the estates, and on the sides of the road,” said James Kimani, who runs a butchery in the area.
Adding that: “People need to change their attitude, because you cannot just throw garbage on the side of the road at night.”
Residents want Nairobi City County office to work out a plan to deal with the garbage problem.
