A 38-year-old fisherman has been arrested and detained at Sena Police Station in Suba West, Homa Bay County for allegedly defiling his 12-year-old adopted daughter.

It was reported that the suspect committed the act in their rental house at Mulundu Beach on Mfangano Island.

According to Suba West Deputy County Commissioner Samson Akach, the incident occurred early in the morning while the girl’s mother had left for Remba Island to sell fish.

The girl, who woke up early to wash utensils in preparation for school, was reportedly assaulted by the suspect thereafter.

Police revealed that the matter came to light after the girl’s mother noticed her limping due to injuries sustained during the assault.

Akach stated that the suspect fled into Lake Victoria after realizing security agencies were searching for him, but he was later apprehended by fellow fishermen and handed over to the police.

The man recently married the girl’s mother and adopted her as his daughter.

Akach warned area residents against violating children's rights and urged the community to be vigilant and report such crimes.
