Residents of
Kibra have raised serious concerns over the worsening sanitation conditions in
the area, citing poor waste management and insufficient sanitation facilities
as the primary issues.
Heaps of
uncollected garbage have become a common sight across markets and residential
neighborhoods, fueling fears of a potential disease outbreak.
In some
parts of the constituency, overflowing drainage systems and clogged sewer lines
have left many families living in unsanitary conditions.
According to
locals, the situation has also impacted local businesses.
“The garbage
pile next to my stall is unbearable. Customers complain about the stench, and I
fear for our health, especially with children around,” Robert Wanga, a fish
vendor, lamented.
Community
leaders and youth groups have accused the county government of neglect,
emphasizing that despite paying taxes and market fees, service delivery remains
poor.
Zachary Ouma
Keya, a carpenter, stated that residents have been enduring these conditions
for the past three years, with little to no response from the current
administration led by Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Health
experts warn that if urgent action is not taken, the area risks escalating into
a public health crisis, with waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid on
the rise.
According to the health experts, this could
put additional pressure on already strained health facilities.
Residents
are now calling on the Nairobi County Government and relevant stakeholders to
intervene by improving garbage collection services and providing adequate
sanitation facilities to safeguard public health.
