The concerns came to the fore after local women, led by village official Mary Wambui, intervened in a case involving a two-year-old child who had reportedly been left behind as the mother sought employment opportunities in Masinga. The child is currently under the care of a villager, while the matter was reported at Nguka Police Post for further handling.
Community members say the incident reflects a broader challenge affecting the area, where some parents—both mothers and fathers—are failing to fully take up their responsibilities.
Speaking to residents, Wambui noted that the situation in parts of Mwea is becoming increasingly worrying, citing cases where children are left without adequate care and support.
“This is an issue that requires collective responsibility from both parents and the community at large,” she said.
Another resident, Waithera Mwangi, attributed part of the challenge to the transient nature of the rice-growing region, where individuals can easily move in and out of villages while working in nearby towns such as Ngurubani.
“The mobility in this area makes it difficult to track households, and in some cases, children are left behind without proper arrangements,” she said.
Local leaders and residents are now calling for greater accountability among parents, emphasizing the importance of ensuring children’s welfare regardless of economic or social challenges.
Peter Njogu, a community member, described the recent actions as a reminder of the need for shared responsibility.
“This should serve as a wake-up call for all parents to prioritize the well-being of their children,” he said.
Authorities have urged residents to report similar cases through the appropriate channels, as efforts continue to address the issue through both community support systems and legal frameworks.
