Residents of Rupingazi, Kiaumbui and Njukiini villages in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, have raised alarm over the rampant brewing and consumption of changaa along the Rupingazi River, which marks the border between Kirinyaga and Embu counties.

According to locals, the illicit liquor is brewed on the Embu side of the river and sold to consumers from both counties in makeshift, semi-permanent structures set up along the riverbank.

Speaking on behalf of affected residents, Martin Mugo and Francis Njiru questioned why the Embu side of the river appears to have become a haven for changaa brewers.

“We are asking whether Embu is not part of Kenya. We want to know who is protecting this changaa business,” Mugo said, echoing the sentiments of fellow villagers.

Residents allege that several people have lost their lives while attempting to cross the river, reportedly under the influence of the illicit brew. Others are said to have been killed following disputes with changaa sellers over payment.

“We are told that some bodies are being dumped in River Rupingazi,” said Mary Wanjiru, terming the situation dire and in urgent need of intervention.

Beyond the reported deaths, residents say the proliferation of changaa dens has eroded the social fabric of the community. Families, they claim, are bearing the brunt of alcoholism as many men spend long hours drinking along the riverbank.

“There are homes where men spend most of their time drinking and neglecting their responsibilities,” Wanjiru said.

The residents are now calling on authorities in both Kirinyaga and Embu counties to take immediate action, saying the area has become a hotspot for crime and lawlessness.

They are demanding a crackdown on the brewing and sale of changaa along the Embu side of the Rupingazi River and prosecution of those behind the illegal trade.
