Residents said that the thugs stormed the shop at around 8pm just as the owner was closing for the day.
“They rushed into the property and ordered the employees to lie down on the floor,” said Sophia Wambui, the owner of the shop.
“Our employees had to obey them, and so we all lay on the floor as ordered by the criminals who went to the safe and took money,” said Wambui.
“I was shocked. I have never encountered armed gangsters in my life, this was my first time and it’s traumatising,” she said.
“They stole a lot of money. The other day they stole from our neighbour. There has been a lot of theft of late in this area,” she said.
According to the residents, Piai trading centre is no longer safe as thugs continue to harass traders.
“The thugs have taken control of this town and are terrorising us, and taking away our hard-earned money and livestock,” reiterated Charles Mwangi, a trader who had his shop broken into a few days ago.
Residents are asking the police from Kirinyaga and their counterparts from Embu to beef up security in the area.
