Laikipia: Alarm over rising cases of livestock theft as 100 cows, 150 goats stolen

A gang attacked a village in Githiga Ward, Laikipia West, and stole at least 150 goats and more than 100 cows.

The attack which took place on Wednesday was carried out by about 15 livestock thieves.

According to the locals, the animals were grazing when the thieves struck, armed with guns.

Kirima area Police Commander Henry Mbogo said there were no injuries during the raid.

He said a multi-agency team was deployed to pursue the criminals and there was a confrontation.

Officers managed to seize 144 goats and six cows.

However,  one security officer - Stephen Mbugua -suffered gunshot wounds during the exchange and is receiving treatment at the Nyahururu Referral Hospital.

Mbogo said security officers are pursuing the criminals to seize the remaining livestock.

Locals have complained about rising cases of cattle theft, and have urged the government to beef up security.
