More and more revellers are trooping to the Lake Victoria to enjoy its sandy beaches and fresh waters, a shift that is now opening up the region.
Residents who have for decades depended on fishing activities as the main economic activity are now having to learn and embrace tourism. Many parents are sending their children to school to study courses related to tourism.
“Our lake now attracts tourists from all over the world, most of whom come to admire the breathtaking scenery and explore the diverse wildlife,” says Peter Okombo, a resident of Mbita, in Homa Bay County.
The communities living along the shores of the lake have developed unique cultures and traditions that revolve around the lake, making it a fascinating destination for cultural immersion.
“As we marvel on the positive impact it's going to have in our communities over the years to come, we must put in place measures to ensure that as the businesses grow the people are empowered, educated and can afford basic amenities while not forgetting to preserve our wildlife and waters from pollution and extinction,” said one of the locals who spoke to Wananchi Reporting.
According to the residents, beach resorts have been mushrooming up at every point with a nice sandy beach where formally were used as fishing points.
This rush towards tourism has brought excitement and some form of liveliness from a previous mode of despair after fishing took a dip.
The locals who could only imagine a vacation can only happen at the coast now are thrilled by the new satisfaction brought about by beach resorts which have attracted people from other corners of the country to try out the new adventures of the lake.
However, climate change and rising water levels have brought challenges to the communities living around Lake Victoria. Some ancestral villages, including the graves of great grandparents, have been submerged by the lake. Families have had to relocate to higher ground to escape the encroaching waters.
Despite these challenges, Lake Victoria continues to be a significant tourist destination, offering opportunities for adventure, cultural exploration, and appreciation of its natural wonders.
Residents are asking their various county governments and the national government to support Lake Victoria as an emerging tourism point.
