A 60-year-old man was on Thursday evening electrocuted while trimming trees in Gachatha village, within Kirinyaga County.

According to the residents, the deceased, Mr. Peterson Muriuki Kamau, was well-known in the village for his mastery and experience in trimming trees and live hedges.

Speaking about the incident, his colleague Peter Gicheru told Wananchi Reporting that Mzee Kamau had been contracted to trim tree branches at a nearby homestead when the incident happened.

“I watched helplessly as he got electrocuted while trimming the trees, there was nothing I could do to help,” Gicheru said.

The family of the deceased want proper investigations to be conducted to ascertain what really happened.

“This is heartbreaking. As family members, we want to be told what happened. This was not supposed to happen,” said the brother Peterson Ndambiri Kamau.

According to the family, the deceased was also a watchman at a nearby secondary school.

Kenya Power Kirinyaga branch manager Eng Ruto Kipkorir asked residents to be careful when trimming trees next to power lines.

“It is important to engage us when undertaking such activities, which I doubt they did. Our officials from Kenya power have visited the scene to investigate and establish what exactly happened," said Ruto.

The incident was reported at the Kutus Police station.

The body of the deceased is lying at the Kibugi Funeral Home waiting postmortem.
