Once a key marker of security and trade in Mombasa, Ndia Kuu in Old Town, has a rich history in the county as the location that housed the first police station in the area and several business activities.

A visit to the site today reveals a place that has borne the brunt of years of neglect, with the building that once housed the police station now dilapidated.

Historian, Alawia Hussein, said, "A police station once stood here and this area has a rich history. Unfortunately, once the police station was relocated, the building was turned into a bar."

"The building then moved from having Swahili themes to contemporary elements."

Hussein went on to describe the significance of the distance between the former police station and Fort Jesus.

"There was a jail within Fort Jesus so once suspects were caught and taken to court and found guilty, they would be ferried there," he said.

Hussein urged the government to take over the building and renovate it.

"It can be turned into a place for social events if rehabilitated," he said.
