Dirty trenches, a foul smell and a busy bus stop. This is characteristic of Cabanas stage along Mombasa Road.
Known to be home to dozens of public service vehicles, the famous spot has grown over the years.
At the Cabanas stage, fleets of matatus line up, ready to ferry passengers to their respective destinations.
However, the bus stop is slowly turning into a garbage disposal area- much to the disappointment of many.
"The foul smell emanating from the trenches makes passengers uncomfortable. We have to make prompt drop-offs and pick-ups," a matatu tout told Citizen Digital.
With travellers flocking the area for short distance or long haul weekend travels, the area becomes crowded, attracting business.
"We have a variety of products and foodstuffs. Hawkers flock the area in a bid to eke a living," another added.
However, the recent development that has seen the face of the popular bus stop change for the worse has drawn concern.
"The waste ends up in the trenches. Some of the foodstuff is also dumped in the trenches. Overtime, a pungent smell clouds the area," a trader added.
Following this, matatu operators have urged passengers and hawkers to be mindful of the environment.
"This is a business hub for many. If we fail to take care of it, passengers will move to other spots," a driver noted.
