More than 1,600 litres of illicit alcohol destroyed in Saku, Marsabit County

Security officers in Saku Constituency, Marsabit County, have destroyed more than 1,600 litres of illicit alcohol.
This follows a crackdown on illegal alcohol in the area, with the operation led by Jirime Chief Enock Kallo.
The local administrator warned those involved in the sale of illegal alcohol and other drugs that the government will not relent in the fight against illicit brew.
“We will heighten patrols and the operation until the production and sale of illicit drinks are completely stopped,” he added.
He further indicated that the operation aims to eradicate illegal businesses and reduce the harms caused by consumption of illicit brew such as chang’aa.
The authories called on social organizations to assist in establishing alternative businesses to support the livelihoods of locals.
This comes as a recent report indicated that Kenyans are consuming more illegal alcohol than ever before, with illicit drinks now accounting for 60 percent of all alcohol sold in the country.
The report, conducted by Euromonitor International and commissioned by the Alcoholic Beverages Association of Kenya, revealed that consumption of unregulated alcohol has increased by 27 percent since 2022.
