The passenger who was standing around the door area is said to have dropped the expensive gadget just as the train was gaining momentum after a temporary stop at the Umoja stage on Tuesday morning.
Others however – claimed that the phone had been snatched by a daredevil thug just as the train was gaining momentum – before jumping off.
A security officer tasked with manning the wagons, and whose company's name has been concealed, told Wananchi that the phone had slipped from the owner’s hands.
He maintained that no theft happened in the train – and vehemently discounted claims by a newspaper vendor that a thug had actually stolen the phone.
“The train is safe because we are here, maybe the owner of the phone was not keen, and he was standing at the entrance, which is against the rules,” said the security guard.
“No one is allowed to stand at the door when the train is moving.”
Adding: “The train is not like a vehicle that stops immediately whenever such an incident is reported.”
The incident provided very good fodder for discussion on the train - with virtually everyone in that specific coach weighing in on the subject.
