Ngurubani residents raise alarm over rising number of street children

According to residents, only a few of the children are orphans, while the majority come from Ngurubani and nearby rice-growing villages such as Maisha Kamili, Kithogondo, Diambo, Kiarukungu, and Gakungu.

Community leader Paul Munene said last year several children were enrolled in local schools through the intervention of the children’s officer, but many have since returned to the streets. He warned the numbers are rising daily and called for urgent government action.

Residents say the presence of the children has led to insecurity, petty crime, and harassment of locals. Some children have also turned to glue sniffing.

“There are cases where parents collect the money their children get from begging, making it difficult to convince them to go back to school,” said resident Henry Wachira.

Others suspect a local trader is supplying glue to the children in exchange for money they collect.

Residents have urged elected leaders and relevant government agencies to intervene before the situation worsens.
