Not another cult? Police rescue 31 people from home of 'spiritual leader' in Nakuru

Police have rescued at least 31 people, including 17 children, who were being held at the home of a suspected cult leader in Nakuru.

The people were being held in a house belonging to one Hellen Wanjiru Weri, aged 62.

The house is located in Kamwene 'B' village, Mugumini sub-location, Lusiru location within Kihingo ward.

According to a police report seen by Citizen Digital and filed on April 27, an alarm was raised by a woman whose daughter absconded her new job to go to the home of Weri.

Rosemary Tuwei, 66, reported to the police that her daughter - Leah Cherono, 35 - was being confined at the house after refusing to report to work as a community health nurse - a job she had secured for her child who has four children.

Tuwei said Cherono was to report to work on April 26, but declined to travel to the work site, alongside her husband.

She was later found to have allegedly been confined at Weri's house, alongside 30 others aged as young as two years old, with the eldest being 59 years.

Weri is alleged to be running an unregistered 'church' by the name Army Rurwama.

The scene was visited by the DCC Njoro sub-county, SCCIO Njoro sub-county, CIPU commander Njoro sub-county, ASTU Likia-based commander.

The people were found in fellowship, fasting and praying. They were rescued, taken to the police station and later released as investigations begin.
