Nyamira: Residents raise alarm over rise in robberies

A section of residents in Nyamauro area, North Mugirango constituency, Kisii county, have protested against a rise in robberies.

They have urged the government to intervene and heighten security.

This comes as a ring of thugs have raided homes in the area, making away with household goods, farm equipment and poultry.

The latest incident involves the theft of a trader's farm equipment from his homestead.

"We are calling on the government to take action and enhance security because we are left counting losses," the trader said.

Elsewhere in Kisii county, a man aged 20 was rescued from the hands of irate residents after he was caught stealing chickens.

Nyumba Kumi area head Robert Muko said the man, called Gilbert Nyakundi, was busted with the chickens on his way to another location.

"He was stopped by locals, who interrogated him and he confessed to stealing the chickens. It is at this point that residents descended on him with blows. He was only saved by Nyumba Kumi members, who calmed the residents," he said.

It was later discovered that Nyakundi had stolen the chickens from his grandfather's homestead and it was found that he had done so on several occasions.
