Nyanza women fight stereotypes in pursuit of elective seats

A group of women vying for positions in the recently concluded General Election have raised concerns over the stereotypes they have had to deal with.

MCA-elect for West Sakwa Ward, Truphosa Osewe, said Nyanza residents are still yet to appreciate women leaders.

Only four women were elected to Siaya County Assembly in the election.

Osewe said she faced intimidation during the campaigns, making them have to invest heavily in security.

"I was, however, encouraged by fellow women to remain determined in my quest to enter a leadership position. Women should continue pushing forward and not fear," she said.

The MCA elect who spoke in Bondo town, told her fellow women that they may not be able to occupy leadership positions in future if they shy away because of intimidation.

She said she will work with everybody including her opponents and their supporters for the sake of development in West Sakwa.

Osewe stated that politics is now over and the only thing that they need to do is to focus on matters of development to be able to grow the ward together.
