Activities at the Nacico Co. Op Chambers building along Moi Avenue, in Nairobi, came to a stop on Monday afternoon after fire broke out in one of the floors.

Firefighters from the Nairobi County were called to the scene moments after the fire broke out. However, the firefighters had a difficult time navigating the roads as people blocked the way.

“I saw thick smoke coming from the building, and people running,” said a witness.

Officers from the county government popular known as kanjo had a rough time trying to control the milling crowd. 

A number of businesses operating around the area had to close following the chaos that followed the fire.

A source told Wananchi Reporting that she saw people running from the building.

According to the Nairobi CBD Head of Operations David Apima, the fire may have been as a result of electrical fault.  

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
