There was tension at a primary school in the Ol-Kalou area of Nyandarua County after it was discovered that water that was to be used for cooking was contaminated.

According to officials, it was not immediately established what kind of substance was in the 2,000-litre water tank on Tuesday.

First to detect the incident was the school cook Mary Wambui, who recounted how she found a foam substance in the water.

She informed the school deputy about the matter, who called for the suspension of usage of water from the tank pending investigations.

Local leaders and administration officials were called in to witness the incident and called for an immediate probe and investigations into the matter, which shocked the entire school community and parents.

Nyandarua County Chief Officer in charge of education, Dr. Pachomius Wambugu, said plans were underway to ensure security is improved at the school and a thorough investigation to establish what happened.

There have been no casualties so far.

Samples of the water were taken for laboratory tests.

The school management has been urged to be vigilant.
