Residents of Migori want all the bridges in the area audited – and where possible – reconstructed to avoid tragedy.
This comes just days after a section of the main Migori bridge collapsed, forcing the Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) to close it.
Residents told Wananchi Reporting that they have been forced to use the main bridge. The bridge is also used by motor vehicles and motorbikes, which poses danger to users.
There is silent concern among residents regarding the poor state of some important bridges in the county of Migori.
These include the famous Ongoche bridge, Kalangi bridge which has wooden planks supporting its weight, built during the colonial period, there is also the Ndemra bridge, among others.
Migori, like other parts of the country, has recorded increased rains, putting pressure on important infrastructure like roads and bridges.
Just recently, a suspected explosive was found buried under the Kalangi bridge in Macalder, immediately raising security concern.
The bridge, built during the colonial period, has wooden support. The bridge is an important lifeline in the gold-rich region of Macalder.
