Two police officers to be charged with murder of suspect in police cell

The two, Tom Mugunde and Ekiru Areman, were arrested following an inquest into the death of 45-year-old Francis Mainyura while he was under police custody at Motonto Police post.

Appearing before court Deputy Registrar Dorcas Onam Mac'ander, the two were ordered to undergo a mental assessment before facing the murder charges.

In 2018, an inquest case was opened and the file was forwarded to the Chief Magistrate at the Kisii Law Courts.

The court ruled the officers who were linked to the death of the suspect be arrested and charged with murder.

The Deputy registrar further ordered the duo be detained at Gesonso police station as they wait for further direction from the court.

The police officers will be taken to Homa Bay Law Court on January 17th to take plea.

A third officer who is also suspected to be involved in the murder case is yet to be arrested on grounds that he is off duty and therefore he has not reported to the sub-county criminal investigation office.
