Youths from Karen gave recent police recruitment a wide berth

Although some recruitment centres across the country registered high numbers – Lang’ata/Karen center had low numbers.

Youths from the affluent Karen estate in Nairobi did not show up for the much-hyped police recruitment exercise held at the Nyayo Stadium.

Mwananchi Reporting has established that most of those who arrived at the Lang’ata/Karen recruitment center to try their luck were young men and women from the neighbouring Kibra slums, popularly referred to as ‘Lower Karen’.

A few others came from a section of Lang’ata estate.

This literally meant that recruits at the centre had a ‘field day’ at the Nyayo Stadium where the exercise went down on March 24.

Although some recruitment centres across the country registered high numbers – Lang’ata/Karen center – had a paltry 264.

Officer Vincent Korir who oversaw the recruitment exercise at the centre told Wananchi Reporting that the numbers were very low compared to the previous year.

"A majority of those who came were eliminated from the education level,” Mr Korir noted.

“Most of Lang’ata and Karen residents did not turn up for the exercise like in the past recruitment,” he noted.

The assumption is that since the estate is mostly associated with Nairobi’s wealthy class – the kids are probably chewing books abroad or don’t just want anything to do with the service

At the centre, only 264 hopefuls turned up for the exercise; 203 being males and 61 being females.

Only 13 slots were allocated for the centre; 11 men and 2 women.
