The initiative, implemented under the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) project—a collaboration between the Kwale County Government and the World Bank—aims to strengthen food security and enhance economic resilience in rural communities through sustainable livestock farming.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Governor Achani lauded the traditional birth attendants for their critical role in improving maternal health by referring expectant mothers to health facilities, a key component of the county’s strategy to reduce maternal mortality.
“Empowering women is empowering entire communities,” Governor Achani said. “Through this livestock program, we are investing in the economic stability of our families and future generations.”
A total of 24 women each received six goats, bringing the total number distributed during the event to 144. The goats, known for their productivity and adaptability, are expected to improve household income through milk production, breeding, and eventual sale. Additionally, the initiative promotes better household nutrition and income diversification among rural women.
“In addition to livestock, we are equipping our communities with farming tools, protective gear, veterinary drugs, and vaccines as part of a comprehensive approach to expand the county’s food basket,” she noted.
Mwanalima Mwangare, chairlady of the Walezi wa Mimba group, welcomed the support with gratitude and optimism.
“These goats are not just animals; they are a pathway to financial independence for our members,” she said. “We are grateful for the support and ready to multiply this gift.”
The initiative highlights the impact of effective partnerships between local governments and donor-funded projects in driving inclusive, sustainable development—especially among marginalized and underserved communities.
