The livestock distribution, supported by the World Bank through the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMSFED) project, is part of a broader strategy to improve milk production and increase household income for smallholder farmers in the coastal county.
Each beneficiary received a dairy cow, personal protective equipment (PPE), vaccines and supplements, starter feed packs, grass seeds, and sexed semen to support breeding. The initiative is designed not only to improve dairy farming productivity but also to contribute to food security and poverty reduction in the region.
Speaking at Mafisini in Msambweni Constituency, Governor Achani reiterated her administration’s commitment to strengthening livestock farming. “I want to state categorically that the milk production and milk value in our County will prosper under my administration. The distribution of dairy cows and goats is central to boosting the milk income for our farmers,” she said.
Since the launch of the program, the county government has distributed over 100 dairy cows and more than 200 dairy goats, benefiting numerous households across Kwale.
Kwale County Assembly Majority Leader and Ramisi Ward Representative, Hanifa Badi Mwajirani, voiced strong support for the initiative. “We have seen a progressive improvement in our milk production through this County's initiative. I want to assure the Governor that any project aimed at uplifting the livelihoods of our residents will receive full support in the County Assembly,” she said.
Beneficiaries of the program have already begun to feel the impact. Priscilla Kyulu, one of the recipients, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the dairy cow will help address critical household needs. “The success of this project will enable us to overcome the various challenges we’ve been facing, especially those related to basic necessities like school fees and food,” she said.
As Kwale continues to roll out agricultural empowerment programs, Governor Achani has urged residents to take ownership of the livestock projects to ensure long-term sustainability and greater economic resilience.
