AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani is confident his team is
ready to mount a serious challenge for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title
this season.
Ambani, who helped the club lift its last league title in
1998 alongside his brother and current club chairman Boniface Ambani, believes
this is the perfect moment to end a 27-year league title drought.
Leopards strengthened their title credentials with a
commanding 4–0 victory over Tusker FC at Nyayo Stadium, marking their eighth
win of the season.
“Fans must be happy and that is the assignment we have, to
ensure that we go for the league title and win it,” said the veteran tactician.
“We should be able to give them something to smile about and appreciate them
for being this patient for the last 27 years. We are going for the title.”
After 16 rounds, the 12-time champions sit on 30 points, three
above archrivals Gor Mahia, with eight wins, six draws, and two losses.
Ambani also revealed plans to reinforce the squad with one
or two new signings without destabilizing the current team.
“One or two players is what we are going for in the upcoming
transfer window. We don’t intend to sign a lot of players because I trust in
the current crop of players I have right now,” he said.
“If we are signing, we don’t want to overdo it to the level
of destabilizing the already exquisite squad we have currently.”
Leopards are next in action against AP Bomet on Saturday before hosting Nairobi United on January 25 as the second round of the season begins.
