Esports Kenya is appealing for financial support as they prepare to compete in the Global Phygital Cup Qualifiers, a high-stakes tournament set to take place in Dubai, UAE.

The event, which runs from July 5 to 9, will bring together 24 of the world’s top-ranked teams vying for just eight available slots at the prestigious Games of the Future world finals scheduled for December 18–23, 2025, also in Dubai.

With a prize pool of $200,000 up for grabs, the Global Phygital Cup has quickly gained global attention as a premier hybrid competition.

The tournament format uniquely blends physical sports with digital gaming. Players will first compete on the pitch, then shift to PlayStation consoles in a test of both athleticism and gaming skill.

Kenya, making its debut on this international stage, has already secured travel and accommodation for its players. However, Esports Kenya Federation President Ronny Lusigi says additional support is urgently needed to cover other critical costs.

“We have so far managed to secure support only for the players’ travel and accommodation,” Lusigi told Citizen Digital.

“But now we need more resources for the support staff to accompany them, and for items like visas, insurance, medical expenses, and playing kits.”

Lusigi is calling on corporate sponsors, government agencies, and well-wishers to step in and help ensure the team is fully prepared and represented on all fronts.

The team captain, Eric Koira, expressed optimism ahead of the qualifiers and assured potential backers of a strong performance.

“This is a huge opportunity for us, a dream come true. Our team is very strong and I am confident that we shall do well. You will not regret supporting us,” Koira said.

As Kenya eyes a spot in the December finals, national pride and the opportunity to put the country on the global phygital map hang in the balance. Support from the public and private sectors could be the final push the team needs to make history.
