Gachagua was attending a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County, when persons believed to be police officers in plain clothes disrupted the proceedings by lobbing teargas and firing gunshots.
Speaking in Machakos County after the incident, Kalonzo condemned the attack, which he said was organized and executed by police officers posing as goons.
He wondered how persons in plain clothes accessed teargas canisters, which are normally a preserve of the Kenya Police Service.
The former Vice President warned the Head of State against the misuse of public institutions to fight political battles.
“I plead with fellow Kenyans to reject the capture of the church, attacks on holy places and throwing of teargas,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader further claimed that Gachagua was whisked to an unknown location during the melee.
“We demand that Rigathi Gachagua be produced, and Kenyans should know his condition. If anything happens to Rigathi Gachagua, William Ruto will not have a country,” he said.
At press time, Citizen Digital is in possession of a video showing Gachagua escaping the church premises in the presence of his aides.
Citizen Digital witnessed the unrest as teargas filled the air in the church, and vehicles were also targeted. Churchgoers also claimed to have retrieved live bullets in the church compound.
Persons believed to be police officers in plain clothes lobbed teargas and fired live ammunition inside the church's compound, where the DCP leader had just arrived to attend Sunday service.
Details surrounding the confrontation, including the extent of injuries or damage, are yet to be communicated.
The Sunday incident was not the first to be witnessed as the former DP has previously been a target of church attacks.
