Former Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has tipped defending champions Gor Mahia to bag a 21st league title having opened up a seven-point gap at the head of the Kenyan Premier League table.
K’Ogalo have amassed 37 points after nailing a 1-0
win over Posta Rangers at the weekend to open up a seven-point gap over
second-placed Nairobi City Stars, and ‘Ghost’ has tipped the Green Army to go
all the way.
Second-placed City Stars have won six matches on the
bounce while Tusker under Coach Robert Matano have won four in a row and are
placed fifth on the log after 17 rounds of play.
Mulee who also coached Tusker, is also of the
thought that the first five teams including Posta Rangers (third), Bandari (fourth),
and Kakamega Homeboyz (fifth) can finish top of the log.
He said: “Gor Mahia have been brilliant so far
having lost zero matches and conceded the least goals (7) and their consistency
has been a pillar for them but also that doesn’t mean they should sit back and
relax.
Another team that has got that momentum keeping them
up there is City Stars and also Tusker will be among the teams to have a keen
eye on,” the ex-Harambee Stars coach explained, adding that, “No, I want to
tell you that all the teams sitting in the first six positions have what it
takes to win the league title this season because the gap between them is small
and there are still a lot of matches to be played.”
For example, someone like Matano has the experience
to climb to the top due to the momentum and what he has experienced so far.
But again, there is another team that should worry
Gor Mahia a lot and that is City Stars. They have not lost or dropped a point
in their last six matches which is a stellar run and should they keep the
momentum then they will cause problems to Gor Mahia and the rest of title
hopefuls,” Mulee equipped.
Gor have won 10 matches and drawn seven and they are
the only team keeping their unbeaten record still intact so far this season.
Meanwhile, at the tail end of the log, communal club
Shabana are finding the going tough after they lost again at the weekend,
falling 0-1 to visiting Muhoroni Youth at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay,
a defeat that saw their fans engage in hooliganism.
From 17 matches they have picked just three wins,
five draws and nine defeats to amass 14 points, occupying position 17, one
above bottom-placed Nzoia Sugar, who after a fine run last term are clinging
onto faint hope as the KPL campaign proves tougher after losing key players, including
their coach of last term, Salim Babu.
Sofapaka too, at position 16, have found the going tough, and have tapped former Gor Mahia man, Zedekiah ‘Zizo’ Otieno, in a bid to steady the sinking ship.
