The first disbursement of Ksh 20 million has already been released, with the full Ksh 30 million budget allocated for the 2024/2025 financial year.
Kwale County currently boasts 43 vocational training centers (VTCs) and over 130 instructors.
These institutions offer a wide range of technical courses including Catering, Plumbing, Masonry, Electrical Engineering, Hairdressing and Beauty, ICT, Mechanical Engineering, Fashion and Design, among others.
Speaking during the launch event at the County headquarters, Governor Achani reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to expanding and improving vocational training infrastructure.
"In the past, the county had very few VTCs. However, through collaboration between the Executive and the County Assembly, we've significantly increased their number," she said.
Governor Achani emphasized that the initiative is designed to equip young people with practical skills that will enable them to earn a living without solely depending on formal employment.
"This grant is a testament to our commitment to uplifting the welfare of our youth," she added.
Her sentiments were echoed by Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo, who reiterated the County Government's dedication to improving education as a pathway out of poverty.
"The only way to lift our people from poverty is by creating an enabling environment where youth are engaged in hands-on activities. We believe this program will help more young people find employment and reduce idleness," said Kombo.
Swabrina Omar Abdallah, a beneficiary from Shimoni, expressed her gratitude to the County Government for the support.
"We appreciate this initiative because many families in this county face financial challenges. Programs like this give hope to young people like me," she said.
As Kwale County intensifies efforts to strengthen its vocational training sector, the grant is expected to ease the financial burden on parents and expand access to technical education for the youth.
