Miss Commonwealth Kenya, Sarah Akinyi, has called for the establishment of functional consortia to replace symbolic gestures within the industry.

Speaking at the 22nd Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) held at Uhuru Gardens, Akinyi emphasized that the modern Kenyan athlete requires a systematic infrastructure to navigate the complexities of the 21st-century global stage.

The gala, brought together sporting legends, government officials, and international diplomats including Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, and the Deputy British High Commissioner, Dr. Ed Barnett MBE and Deputy Chinese Ambassador, Zhang Zhizhong and Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie.

Here, Akinyi advocated for Sovereign Agency”, a Commonwealth Kenya-guided agenda focuses on building independent, community-owned support systems and transition of social capital from veterans to the youth.

She urged stakeholders to move toward a model where mentorship is viewed as a relay, specifically designed to cultivate emotional intelligence and brand management.

This framework aims to ensure that sports personalities continue to thrive long after their active competitive careers have concluded, echoing a vision long championed by SOYA founder Paul Tergat and Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie.

Central to this push for systematic logic is the integration of the sporting industry into the broader economic engine of the Commonwealth bloc.

Akinyi advocated for "economic synchronicity," where raw talent is intentionally paired with trade opportunities and professionalized pipelines to create sustainable careers.

The event also celebrated the power of international friendship and social inclusion.

The spirit of excellence was further reflected in the recognition of the Kenya Lionesses and the dominant performances of school teams like Butere Girls High School and St. Luke’s Boys High School Kimilili.

Furthermore, the awards honoured champions such as double Deaflympic world record holder Ian Wambui Kahinga and World Para Athletics silver medalist Sheila Wanyonyi.

A new era of preparation is expected as Kenya looks toward the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
