Big changes are underway at Mombasa United following the dismissal of head coach Hamadi Said, as the club moves swiftly to rescue its National Super League (NSL) season.

Elisha Mwasi, a CAF C-licensed tactician, has been appointed interim head coach. Mwasi previously coached the Coast Regional Youth Select Team and now takes over a side hovering dangerously close to relegation.

According to team manager, Gilbert Wesonga, the decision comes on the back of a poor run of form that has left the coastal side teetering dangerously close to relegation.

“We have decided to part ways with our head coach Said, who has been with the team from day one, and appoint coach Elisha on an interim basis to try and salvage our season,” stated Wesonga.

“We are in a dangerous relegation position and must work really hard to remain in the NSL next season,” he added.

Said joined the club in October after a stint with Tanzania’s Coastal Union but struggled to deliver consistency.

His exit comes with United 16th on the NSL log with 34 points, just above the drop zone.

Mwasi’s debut ended in a 2-0 home loss to Naivas FC, but Wesonga remains optimistic.

“We created plenty of chances, but our opponents were clinical. We played well, and I’m confident we’ll bounce back with wins against Nzoia Sugar away and Kibera Black Stars at home in our final two matches,” noted the tactician.

Wesonga also had a passionate message to the club’s loyal fanbase.

“We are ready for the fight, and I promise our fans that come next season, we will still be in the National Super League and continue nurturing local talent.”
