Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has challenged Interior Cabinet
Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen to focus on his duties and cease turning a
blind eye to investigating violence during political rallies.
Speaking to Citizen TV on Monday, Mukunji criticised CS Murkomen’s
recent statements on the recent attacks witnessed in political rallies, where
he claimed that civilians and opposition groups have acquired teargas to
choreograph attacks.
He called out Murkomen for failing to administer the mandates
of his office by always shifting blame, yet investigations for violence
witnessed since June 2024 anti-government protests remain unresolved.
“One person who has been given an important docket should
grow up a little. You have not concluded any investigation on matters that have
happened since 2024, yet you’re coming and saying people have teargas and
canisters,” said Mukunji.
“This is about making this country safe as we approach the
2027 elections. The CS should keep quiet and do his job.”
The remarks come days after CS Murkomen condemned violence at
political gatherings, faulting leaders for orchestrating unrest to gain public
sympathy.
“This comedy of going to meetings with teargas and carrying
goons armed with knives and batons, we will deal with firmly,” he said,
speaking at a church service in Kericho County.
This lies on the backdrop of attacks witnessed during
political rallies led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and allies of the rival
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) faction.
The rallies, dubbed the LindaMwananchi tour, experienced disruptions in Kitengela,
Kajiado County, on February 15 and another in Kakamega County on February 22.
One person died in each gathering.
