Drama unfolded at the burial of 74-year-old Mzee Francis Ngari in Kiarukungu village, Mwea Constituency, Kirinyaga County, after area Member of Parliament Mary Maingi grabbed the microphone while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was addressing mourners on a phone call.

Mzee Francis Ngari is the father of Michael Kinyua Ngari, who serves as the Treasurer of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme Water Users Association.

Tebere Ward MCA Peter Karinga told mourners that Gachagua wanted to greet them, noting that the deceased was the former DP’s schoolmate at Kianyaga High School in Gichugu, Kirinyaga.

As the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader began speaking, MCA Karinga asked a Mwea MP aspirant to hold the microphone while he held his phone for the call.

While addressing mourners, Gachagua said the government was impoverishing them by importing rice while Members of Parliament watched as their people were oppressed.

“We will not bow down to anyone… the biggest problem we have are traitors of our community, the leaders we elected who do not advocate for our people,” he said.

“They work together with Kasongo as he oppresses us… Like your MP Mary Maingi is a traitor of the community, she sits with Ruto as he oppresses us…”

It is at this point that MP Maingi, who was calmly seated following the phone address stood up and started shouting “shame on you…”

This in turn led to a push-and-pull between the MP and the two leaders who had been speaking to Gachagua, causing a temporary disruption of the burial.
