A police officer arrested on Wednesday on the Nakuru-Mogotio Road in Nakuru County ferrying charcoal in a Land Cruiser has been charged.

Kenya Forest Service officers said they got information about the car loaded with bags of charcoal driving towards Nakuru but after trying to intercept it, the driver declined to stop.

“They gave chase to the said motor vehicle up to Naivasha and then back to Nakuru Town where he had called for reinforcement and they managed to intercept it at the Safaricom roundabout,” reads a report filed at the Nakuru Police Station.

The driver, Benjamin Wasike, who is a Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) for Tiaty West was arrested and the officers disarmed him with a pistol loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.

The officers also recovered 20 bags of charcoal in the car.

Police said Wasike was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and movement of charcoal without authority.

The officer was released on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 and the case will be mentioned on December 23.
