Residents of Mariwa in Awendo Sub-County have expressed growing concerns over a rise in insecurity at Mariwa Trading Centre, a situation they attribute to the non-functional street lights in the area.

The residents’ call comes amid a push for the urgent need for improved security measures and reliable lighting to restore safety in the region.

Led by former councilor Martin Ondong, the residents explained that criminals are taking advantage of the darkness to break into shops and rob individuals purchasing food and other items at night.

Ondong noted that traders have been forced to close their businesses early out of fear of attacks, which has significantly undermined commercial activity in the trading centre.

He also pointed out that Ulanda Trading Centre is experiencing similar issues with dysfunctional street lights and called on the responsible authorities to address the matter urgently.
