The hospital’s capacity has increased tenfold from 40 to 400 beds and now includes an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), expanded outpatient services and specialised clinics aimed at improving access to advanced healthcare for city residents.
President Ruto announced that the national government will invest Ksh.400 million in modern medical equipment to ensure the facility is fully operational from the outset. He added that patients registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) will access services free of charge.
The new facility is expected to ease pressure on Mbagathi Hospital, Kikuyu Level 4 Hospital, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and Pumwani Maternity Hospital, which have faced increasing patient numbers in recent years.
“This 400-bed facility will serve many and decongest our existing hospitals,” the President said.
Governor Sakaja described the project as part of a cooperation framework between the national and county governments focused on accelerating service delivery. He emphasised that the priority is not just completing infrastructure, but ensuring facilities are properly equipped and staffed.
Beyond healthcare, the two leaders commissioned a newly completed workshop block at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute to strengthen technical and vocational training. President Ruto announced an additional KSh250 million investment to construct hostels that will accommodate 580 trainees, noting that skills development remains central to youth empowerment.
In the education sector, they also handed over 17 new classroom blocks, including a tuition block at Kawangware Primary School. The President said 800 classrooms have been built in Nairobi over the past year and that 1,000 teachers have been employed across the city to improve learning outcomes.
The tour also highlighted ongoing market upgrades and infrastructure works under a broader Sh80 billion development framework targeting roads, drainage, water supply, sanitation, street lighting and modernised trading spaces.
Governor Sakaja said the cooperation between the two levels of government is designed to fast-track critical projects and improve service delivery in the capital, noting that the additional investment significantly expands Nairobi’s development capacity beyond its annual Sh40 billion budget.
