Former Kenyan international James Situma believes that early preparation will be key to Kenya's success at the upcoming Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The tournament is set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in August 2025, and Situma stressed the importance of adequate preparation for the national team, Harambee Stars.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Sporty Monday show, Situma urged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to establish a solid structure for selecting players based on merit, ensuring the team has enough time to prepare ahead of the tournament.

“We have to select the team of local players based on merit. We have the talent in the country and (it) will be key for us to succeed if proper work is put in play. I am sure we have what takes to go far in the tournament,” said a confident Situma, who has played for AFC Leopards, Tusker, Sofapaka, and Albanian side KF Tirana.

As a director at Spire Academy, Situma also highlighted the importance of talent development from a young age.

“Every country in the world that has proper football structures always succeeds in many tournaments because they develop talent from a very young age, and that is what we are trying to do at Spire, and I am impressed by the progress,” he added.

The former Kenyan international also expressed confidence in the current FKF leadership, noting, “They have the passion to develop sports, and I believe they can take Kenyan football to the next level.”
