In a decisive move to upscale the battle against illicit liquor in Kenya, more than a hundred alcohol outlets have been closed in Nyeri County.

This crackdown, part of the government's efforts to curb the sale of illegal and harmful illicit alcohol, has been met with support and a call for continued vigilance.

Speaking during the annual Nyeri breakfast event, attended by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi, Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu said the order has been effected on establishments that border schools.

“Since last year we have cleared 85% of such outlets. The last three days we have closed over 100 illicit brew establishments that are around learning institutions. We are also dealing with illegal chemists and agrovets dispensing illegal drugs,” Murugu said.

Authorities in Nyeri County remain committed to upholding public safety and health.

Last week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced new measures to intensify war on illegal brews.

Among the new strategies was an order barring police officers from operating liquor businesses, and the closure of liquor outlets near residential areas and learning institutions.
