Ten people, among them a 2-year-old child have died after a road crash involving five motor vehicles.

The accident occurred on Monday, 8.30 pm in Salama area, on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

According to Dr Jane Mwende, the Medical Superintendent at Sultan Amud sub-county hospital, police took nine bodies to the facility on Monday night. The child, who was in critical condition succumbed to injuries.

Mwende also confirmed that 12 people were taken to the facility with injuries with some referred to Makindu Hospital.

A police report from Salama Police Station states that four bodies were retrieved immediately while 5 others were discovered trapped in the wreckage. Police say that heavy rains in the area hampered efforts to detach the wreckages.

The multiple crash occurred as after the driver of a lorry, which was heading to Mombasa direction failed to keep to its proper traffic lane and turned right abruptly. As a result, it collided with a matatu, which was thrown to another vehicle leading to a crash of five vehicles.
