60% of impounded sugar unfit for human consumption – Health PS

Health Permanent Secretary Peter Tum now says 60 percent of the imported sugar tested has been found unfit for human consumption.

Mr. Tum was speaking before the Parliamentary Committee probing the entry of contraband sugar into the country on Tuesday.

He stated that they had so far tested 172 samples and that testing was still ongoing.

According to the PS, the Ministry of Health has already written letters to county governments demanding for the unfit sugar to be destroyed.

“Sugar from Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu among others failed the test,” said PS Tum.

The  legislators pressed the PS to name the owners of the tested consignments but Tum was, however, adamant saying they could not.
