KDF officer stabs 2-year-old son to death

An officer from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) killed his two-year-old son and then stabbed himself in Bungoma on Sunday night.

Kennedy Simiyu is said to have locked himself and the child inside their house in Makunga village after an alleged dispute with his wife who had travelled to Nairobi in search of a job.

Neighbours alerted the police who arrived at the scene and attempted to break into the house to save the child but their efforts were in vain.

Bungoma OCPD Eliud Okello said the man was rushed to Webuye Hospital and is in critical condition.

This is not the first time that a KDF officer has been involved in such an incident. Last month, an officer was arrested in Karachuonyo on suspicion of killing his wife after he appeared at the county hospital mortuary with the body of the deceased.

An autopsy report revealed that she died of injuries inflicted on her even as the man, 51, insisted that she had taken poison.

Officers are known to face psychological challenges in their line of duty and according to Dr John Kibosia, head of Medical Service at the National Police Service, there is need to introduce counselling services to help them deal with these issues.
