Bupa Global Kenya has expanded its social impact investments with the commissioning of a solar-powered borehole in Kilifi County; a move aimed at strengthening community health outcomes while advancing its long-term growth strategy in the region.
The project, located in Garashi, Magarini Sub-County, will
provide clean and reliable water to about 11,000 residents, supporting
households, schools and healthcare facilities. It is the fourth borehole funded
by the company in Kilifi, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to over
33,000.
The healthcare insurer said the initiative is part of its
broader ambition to extend clean water access to 100,000 people by 2028,
aligning with its focus on preventative healthcare and sustainable community
investment.
The solar-powered system includes a four-kilometre
distribution network supplying six key points, including Garashi Health Centre
and Garashi Primary School, helping ease water shortages that have long
affected the area.
Bupa Global Kenya CEO Uditha Jayaratne said the investment
reflects the firm’s strategy of building long-term partnerships in communities
where it operates. He noted that improving access to clean water is critical to
reducing disease burden and supporting better health outcomes.
The project also carries economic benefits, reducing the cost
of water for institutions such as health centres that previously relied on
deliveries, while freeing up time for households—especially women and girls,
who often spend hours fetching water.
Implemented in partnership with the Kilifi County Government
and Griot Impact, the project includes a structured maintenance programme and
community training to ensure sustainability.
County officials welcomed the investment, noting that while
the devolved government has expanded water infrastructure, supply gaps remain
in several regions.
The initiative comes as Bupa Global Kenya positions the
country as a key hub for its Africa expansion, with increased focus on
preventative health programmes, community engagement and long-term impact
investments.
