The Catholic Diocese of Embu has cleared
petty fines and bonds worth Ksh.40,000, securing the release of 10 women from
Embu Women’s Prison.
The initiative, led by Bishop Peter Kimani
with support from Caritas-Embu and Catholic groups, was announced during a
confirmation Mass at Embu Main Prison where 35 inmates received the sacrament.
Bishop Kimani, formerly a prison chaplain
for over 20 years, called the effort the Church’s Easter gift, aimed at giving
second chances to those jailed for minor offences due to inability to afford
bail.
Alongside the releases, Caritas-Embu
donated 50 plastic chairs and essential items such as soap, sanitary pads, and
bread, with a pledge to deliver more.
Caritas Director, Father Alex Mati, said
the outreach, part of the Jubilee Year of Hope celebrations, was funded by
Christians, well-wishers, and staff contributions.
Prison officials welcomed the gesture, with
Senior Superintendent Rachael Mugwe confirming the releases and Deputy
Officer-in-Charge John Kanyugi praising the Church for offering hope to
inmates.
Bishop Kimani urged inmates to enrol in
free vocational training programs and called on society to embrace
rehabilitated ex-inmates.
