After his arrest, police drove Mwangi to his office in Kilimani, where they ransacked the premises and confiscated a number of items.
According to his wife Njeri Mwangi, the detectives cited “terrorism and arson” as the reasons for his arrest.
In an update on Sunday morning, the DCI confirmed Mwangi’s arrest, saying he is detained at Pangani police station.
Police alleged that Mwangi was arrested for ‘facilitating terror during the June 25 protests’ that were witnessed countrywide.
The DCI further alleged that during the arrest, they recovered two mobile phones, a laptop, and several notebooks.
“...a search led to the recovery of: nine assorted external hard drives, two laptops, company seals for Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd, a company stamp, six cheque books, copies of stamp duty documents, two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round,” DCI alleged.
The police say Mwangi will be arraigned in court on Monday, where he is set to face offences related to “facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition.”
However, his family and acquaintances could not confirm that he is at Pangani police station.
Citizen Digital spoke to Njeri Mwangi on Sunday morning as she was headed to Pangani police station to confirm Mwangi’s presence there. Njeri said she was headed to Pangani to confirm Mwangi’s state.
Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid also expressed uncertainty about Mwangi’s whereabouts.
“We are not sure where he is. Police are giving conflicting information. Pangani are saying he's been moved out. DCI are saying he's at Pangani,” Khalid told Citizen Digital.
“Last night when we last saw him, he was well and in high spirits,” he added.
