Expired milk powder worth Ksh.75 M impounded at a Nairobi godown

A statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the milk powder had been flagged at the Port of Mombasa and was due for disposal since it had been declared unfit for consumption.
"The illegal shipment in which the government lost over Ksh.32 Million in unpaid taxes was immediately declared unfit for human consumption by officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)," read part of the statement.
DCI added that after raiding the premise they found 25 kg bags with labels detailing their expiry dates removed and were ready for repackaging.
The mind-bending question investigators from the DCI, the Economic & Commercial Crimes Unit, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) seek to unravel is how the consignment ended up at the godown despite it being uncustomed.
"It is suspected that the consignment was sneaked from a Mombasa-based godown, before being hauled to Nairobi secretly for repackaging, to be sold to unsuspecting members of the public," read part of the statement.
A manhunt has been launched for the masterminds behind the scheme.
