A family in Kakamega County is in agony after their kin allegedly collapsed and died from a fatal injection administered to her at Elwesero Health Centre in Kakamega.

24-year-old Annette Injene, who had been complaining of abdominal pains, was accompanied to the hospital by her three-year-old daughter where she collapsed moments after allegedly being injected by one of the medics.

“She arrived at my place at around 10 am on a boda boda and we went to the hospital together…the doctor told her to come in for her treatment. He however said that they did not have drugs and that she should return on Monday to collect her medication,” Jentrix Auka, an eye witness explained.

“He then injected her with some drug and she began feeling nauseatic. The doctor called his colleague and they began administering first aid but she unfortunately didn’t make it.”

The medic responsible allegedly vanished after efforts to resuscitate the patient failed, leaving the family devastated.

The autopsy report revealed that the deceased died of therapeutic misadventure, a condition caused by adverse medical management.

“The report I am getting is that the cause is called therapeutic misfortune, meaning the death of my sister has been caused by the reaction of a drug. We are yet to know which type of drug was used,” the sister to the deceased Susan Injene noted.

Dr Dickson Muchana, a pathologist at Kakamega County Referral Hospital accompanied by officers from the DCI, handed over the autopsy report to the family.

“We have undertaken an open autopsy in the presence of family members and agreed on the findings. We have handed over the report to DCI officers,” Muchana stated.

The family is now seeking justice following the unfortunate incident.

“We are fighting for our rights; why did our sister die? She walked into the hospital by herself together with her kid but she did not return!” Her brother Richard Injene said.
