Four suspected robbers shot dead in Nairobi, three firearms recovered

Four robbery with violence suspects have been gunned down and three firearms recovered following a series of operations to curb insecurity in Nairobi.

The first incident occurred at Kwa Viatu near Kamukunji grounds where two thugs were shot dead and the other occurrences along Thika road at Kastemill area where another pair was killed in two separate robberies.

A statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday revealed that in the first incident which occurred at dawn, four armed gang members were cornered by police officers who were on a routine patrol shortly after the quartet mugged two people.

The thugs fired at the police officers who retaliated killing two of them on the spot. The other pair is said to have fled the scene by diving into the Nairobi River.

Two of the thugs were lucky to escape the onslaught by diving into the nearby Nairobi river, opting to swim downstream while gulping mouthfuls of the heavily polluted water infested with human and household waste,” read the statement.

The DCI said that one homemade firearm capable of firing was recovered alongside other items including a blood-stained knife, mobile phones and six wallets.

The second incident along Thika road saw an armed robber shot dead while attempting to cross over from Zimmerman to Kastemill carrying stolen goods.

According to police, the suspect was flagged down to surrender but he declined, prompting the security officers to gun him down.

A Beretta pistol loaded with 2 rounds of 9mm ammunition is said to have been recovered from him together with a 43’ inch flat screen television which the sleuths suspect had been stolen at a house in Zimmerman.

At the same time, the third hoodlum succumbed to gunshot injuries while his accomplice escaped with serious injuries following a fierce gun battle with police officers after the dual refused to give themselves up.

“The two armed with a Browning pistol loaded with 13 rounds of 9mm calibre were no match to the sleuths’ ferocious firepower coupled with sufficient government ammo, that fatally wounded one of them instantly as his accomplice fled to nearby shrubs with life-threatening injuries,” DCI stated.

Following the operation, officers also managed to confiscate yet another firearm, raincoat, handcuff keys, four mobile phones, two master keys and a dagger.

While imploring medical practitioners to be on the lookout for injured men in hospitals, the DCI has reassured the public that a manhunt for the missing thugs is underway.
