The government has praised leaders and communities in Nyakach and neighbouring areas of Kericho County for progress made in restoring peace and stability in a region that has previously experienced inter-community security challenges.
Internal Security and National
Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo commended the efforts
during the burial ceremony of the late Lt. (Rtd.) George Were in Nyakach,
noting that collaboration between local leaders and security agencies had
helped ease tensions that previously resulted in cattle rustling, destruction
of property and loss of lives.
Dr. Omollo acknowledged the role
played by the Nyakach Member of Parliament, Members of County Assembly and
leaders from Kisumu and Kericho counties for working together with security
agencies to promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
According to the PS, continued
engagement among community leaders, administrators and security officers has
been instrumental in restoring calm in the region.
“Peace is not something we
achieve once and forget. It is something we must protect every day through
dialogue, cooperation and responsible leadership,” he said, urging residents
and leaders to safeguard the gains made and maintain peaceful coexistence
between the communities of Kisumu and Kericho counties.
Dr. Omollo also appealed to young
people across the country not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to
perpetrate violence as the country gradually moves toward the next
electioneering period.
He emphasised that political
competition must not degenerate into chaos, destruction of property or loss of
life, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring democratic freedoms
are exercised within the law.
“The President has been very
clear from the first day that under his leadership, violence and chaos will not
become the currency of our politics,” he said.
The PS further addressed a Friday
incident in Migori County, describing it as unfortunate and noting that
security agencies had already been tasked with establishing the facts and
ensuring accountability.
He said the government has
directed security officers to ensure that anyone involved in criminal activities
faces the full force of the law, regardless of their status.
“It does not matter whether you
are an elected leader, an aspiring leader, a businessman or an ordinary
citizen. The rule of law must prevail,” Dr. Omollo said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining peace
and strengthening security coordination across the country, urging leaders at
all levels to emulate the cooperation demonstrated between communities in
Nyakach and Kericho.
